Why Twitter matters to Realtors. Most think it doesnt BTW!
So you can’t seem to get anyone to follow you huh?
Plenty of “friends” on Facebook at this point but RT and @ or # confuse you more than make you want to learn? Don’t worry many Realtors feel the exact same way. Seems like you need to be Ashton Kutcher or Perez Hilton to grow a following. Don’t fret. Tech Savvy Agent is going to ask that you look at Twitter a bit differently as a realtor, your not a celebrity and that’s okay Buddy King.
First, you will never have a million followers and that is perfectly okay. Really just looking for people in your local market anyway so be realistic with your popularity going in. So many agents complain that “i signed up for Twitter or Facebook or LinkedIn and i didnt get anything from it”. Well to get out you must put in so time block 30 minutes a day or so to learning and maintaining your presence. Bet you spend more time than that on some days just checking out the MLS.
Second, we are going to argue that if you never got one person to follow you that would be okay. Let’s say you are following someone like Tom Ferry/Howard Brinton or maybe also a group like Tech Savvy Agent(Tech Savvy Agent Twitter Page)and your only reason to log in a few times a week becomes to learn not to market yourself. Wouldn’t that be worth free? Instead of spending hours cruising the web looking for new ideas to grow your business read ours. Need articles to share with your own sphere of influence or potential buyers and sellers? Those will just be waiting for you every time you log into Twitter and they have already been proven to be popular and relevant. If they weren’t we wouldn’t have posted them! Just a few thoughts from Tech Savvy Agent. Would love to hear yours as well!

You know the Headline drew me into this post. I’ve read through three times, am I missing something? I am still on the fence about Twitter. It’s not about whether or not there’s value, it’s about time. I focus on Facebook right now…
Jonathan,
Sorry if you missed the point let us reiterate!
The point is that we want agents to look at Twitter as a way to bring the news, hot topics in real estate and strategies that are working to them not spend precious time that you could be prospecting browsing the web for ideas. You may never meet Tom Ferry buy you can follow him for free using Twitter. You could spend all day Googling topics or you could set up those same keywords for your Twitter Feed and everytime you need an idea or an article Twitter can be your go to website. Bottom line don’t worry about followers, worry about missing out on sone of the best minds and info in real estate. That why Twitter is a must. Hope that clears it up a bit. Btw good headlines are also a must on Twitter! Lol.
Also, you are “focusing on Facebook” for relationship building and prospecting as you well should be. Focus on Twitter as a way to bring the up to the second news and info that’s relevant to your business and local market to you instead of searching for it! Big misconception that FB and TwitteR serve the same purpose for different audiences. Just not the case.
You can also use it to supplement your Real-estate Website/blog by using a plugin or one of Twitters widgets to post your updates right to your home page. Send out a daily market report or a daily report on interest rates. Remember these are short little tidbits that can’t be longer than 140 characters.
I get it. And always have. Tech Savy you are right, if all you get out of it is the “up to the second news” as a Realtor you are already ahead of about 99% of the rest of the Realtors today! The more you know in todays market, the more you make.
Twitter is like the old “CNN” was when Ted Turner stated 24 hour news channel and everyone thought he was crazy. Today after a major story, I check Twitter. When the plane landed on the Hudson in New York, I followed the guy who took the picture of the plane in the water from ferry picking up passengers off the wings. His picture was used the next day on all news organizations. Also sent him a tweet about his experience and he responded back to me the next day..pretty cool tool.I found him using real time results from Twitter, you can not get fresher news than that.
My web traffic is up because of Twitter! I met Rudy from Trulia in person because of Twitter. I’ve gotten 4 clients, all from Twitter. I do get ideas and read news, blog posts and interact with Tweeple I would have no access to otherwise all because of Twitter.
@Jonathan, your network on Facebook more than likely already knows you. Think of twitter as a way to get to know “Cold Contacts” in your industry, neighborhood, or market place or more important become the Virtual Market Expert in your town.
